Baxter’s Firewood & Mulch is owned and operated by Drew Baxter, with his dad, Steve, backing him every step of the way. We’re not a middleman and we’re not a side hustle — making great firewood is what we do, every single day, from our yard in Camanche, Iowa.
Drew started in this trade as a high-school freshman, stacking and bundling wood for the local hardwoods business he’d eventually buy. After years of learning every job in the yard, he took over the operation — kiln and all — and now runs it hands-on, in the wood, every day. That means when you call Baxter’s, you’re talking to the person who actually cut, dried, and loaded your wood.
With close to a decade in the trade and Steve handling the details behind the scenes, Baxter’s runs like a family should: dependable, straightforward, and genuinely proud of the product that goes out the door.
“Seasoned” just means wood that’s been left in a pile to air-dry — and how dry it actually is depends on the weather, the stack, and how long it sat. You’re often gambling on wood that’s still too wet to burn well.
Kiln-dried firewood takes the guesswork out. We dry every batch in our kiln for 46 hours at 255°F, which brings the moisture down to roughly 10–15% — consistently, load after load.

We buy from loggers across Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin — up to 10 semi-loads a week in peak season.

Kiln-Dried & Tested
Cut, loaded into kiln baskets, and dried 46 hours at 255°. We check moisture and burn quality regularly — if it’s not right, it goes back in.
